Island Lake family displaced after house fire

A family in Island Lake was forced to leave their home Thursday after a fire that started in a bedroom caused heavy damage, authorities said.

First responders first saw the fire through a window when they arrived at the home in the 700 block of Newport Drive in Island Lake, according to a news release from the Wauconda Fire District. They said they were told everyone was out of the house, but that the family's dog was still inside.

Officials said firefighters began attacking the blaze and rescued the dog, which was unharmed, and had the fire under control within about 25 minutes.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital and treated for heat exhaustion. No one else was hurt, the release said. While the fire was contained to the bedroom area in which it started, officials said the rest of the house suffered smoke and heat damage, forcing the home's utilities to be shut off due to unsafe conditions. The Red Cross, which assists victims of house fires, was contacted to help the family, the release said.

Officials said the cause of the fire hasn't yet been determined.
