Lisle police charge 3 men with DUI

Three men accused of driving under the influence in Lisle also face several other charges ranging from endangering a child to using a cellphone while driving and causing a crash, authorities said Monday.

The charges stem from three cases between 4 a.m. Saturday and 12:30 a.m. Monday.

The first came when officers responded to a three-car crash about 4 a.m. Saturday on Route 53 at Southport Avenue.

Deputy Chief Ron Wilke said Chi Wai Chan, 29, of the 4500 block of Beau Monde Drive in Lisle, is accused of using his cellphone while driving his 2009 Honda Accord north on Route 53 and rear-ending a vehicle that was stopped at Southport. That vehicle was pushed into the car in front of it. All three reported "extensive damage," but no one was injured.

Chan failed a field sobriety test, and officers found open alcohol in his car, Wilke said. He has been charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, illegal use of an electronic communication device and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

Chan is due in DuPage County Court on June 6.

The second case began when police found a black Dodge parked across several spaces, including a handicapped spot, about 1:19 a.m. Sunday at the Circle K gas station at the southeast corner of Route 53 and Maple Avenue. The engine was running, but no one was inside the car, Wilke said.

The officer entered the gas station and saw James C. Macon, 35, of the 3500 block of Maple Avenue in Berwyn, exit the shop and move the Dodge so it was parked legally. The gas station clerk told the officer Macon appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, Wilke said.

Police checked security video and observed Macon driving into the lot and parking. Officers took Macon into custody, and he has been charged with DUI, aggravated driving with a revoked license and driving uninsured.

The weekend's final DUI arrest occurred about 12:21 a.m. Monday when police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked on the 4700 block of Beau Bien Lane West, beeping its horn continuously.

Wilke said police found Carmelino Diaz inside a 2008 Chevy Malibu with his 2-year-old son unsecured on his lap. Diaz, 34, of the 2900 block of Wellington Avenue in Lisle, showed signs of alcohol impairment and failed a field sobriety test. Wilke said he was charged with DUI and endangerment of the life or health of a child.

Wilke said the child was returned to his mother. Diaz is due in court June 13.
