Authorities: Aurora police dog bites suspect who ran into house, hid under bed

A 27-year-old West Chicago man was bitten by a police dog and arrested after authorities say he ran into a random home on Aurora's near southeast side and hid under a bed when police tried to arrest him for driving a stolen vehicle.

Guillermo M. Velazquez, of the 500 block of Kimball Street, faces two counts of aggravated battery to a police officer and one count of criminal trespass to a residence, all felonies, along with three misdemeanor counts of resisting police.

Aurora police said Velazquez was driving a stolen vehicle near Ashland Avenue and Fifth Street around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. The officer ordered Velazquez out of the vehicle, but he pulled away and ran north on Fifth, then west on the 900 block of Lafayette Street and eventually into a house.

The owner of the home, a 30-year-old man, ran outside as Velazquez ran inside and tried to hide under a bed, police said.

Police said numerous officers, including the police dog Kato and his handler, surrounded the home and ordered Velazquez to surrender.

Velazquez refused and the dog was sent into a second-story bedroom, quickly found Velazquez under a bed and bit him. The officers moved in to make the arrest and were walking Velazquez down the stairs when he kicked an officer in the chest.

Velazquez is being held at the Kane County jail on $75,000 bail, meaning he must post $7,500 to be released while the case is pending. He is next due in court on May 16.

If convicted of the aggravated battery to police charge, he faces a punishment ranging from probation to up to seven years in prison.
