$5 million bail for suspects in Elgin double-fatal shooting

Bail was set Wednesday at $5 million each for two Chicago men charged with first-degree murder in the fatal weekend shootings of two Elgin men in an apartment complex parking lot near Wing Park on the city's near west side.

Kane County Judge Christine Downs set bail for Travaris D. Stevenson, 22, of the 500 block of West Congress Parkway, who in his eight counts of first-degree murder charges is accused of firing the fatal shots in the Sunday afternoon killings of Mark McDaniel, 26, and Raymond Dyson, 29.

Lee P. Spain, 32, of the 8000 block of South Ellis Street, is charged with four counts of murder in the deaths of Dyson and McDaniel. His bail was set Wednesday morning in Elgin Branch Court, and he is next due in court Thursday.

Spain and Stevenson also faced felony marijuana possession charges and must post $500,000 each if they are to be released from the Kane County jail while the cases are pending.

The shooting occurred around 2:08 p.m. Sunday and police arrested both men within 20 minutes, authorities said.

Kane County Assistant State's Attorney Bridget Sabbia on Wednesday argued for a $5 million bail for Stevenson, saying he was on parole from a 2014 felony charge of delivery of a controlled substance from Cook County.

Stevenson also is a gang member, was found guilty in juvenile court of felony possession of a controlled substance in 2011, and is a suspect in another shooting in Cook County, Sabbia said.

Stevenson is next due in court on May 17.

If convicted of killing both men, Spain and Stevenson face natural life in prison with no chance of parole or early release.
