Elgin man gets 15 years for knifing girlfriend

An Elgin man was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Wednesday for a domestic knife attack last year, according to the Kane County state's attorney's office.

John C. Hawkins, 23, pleaded guilty to a charge of armed violence.

The attack took place about 2 a.m. April 9, 2017, on the 900 block of Bellevue Avenue.

Hawkins followed his girlfriend into their bathroom with a steak knife, and after an argument, he grabbed her neck and slashed her throat, missing her carotid artery by a quarter of an inch.

Hawkins, who was on probation for a drug offense at the time, then fled through an apartment window.

He must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence and will receive credit for 368 days spent in Kane County jail.
