Des Plaines man killed in crash on I-80

A Des Plaines man was killed Friday in a high-speed crash at Interstate 80 and Interstate 294 in the South suburbs.

James Michael, 37, died from injuries suffered in the crash that occurred about 2 p.m. Friday, according to Illinois State Police.

Michael was the passenger in a black 2014 Infiniti car driving east on I-80 at the intersection with I-294 when the driver lost control and sideswiped a gray 2006 Pontiac sedan, police said. While spinning out of control, the Infiniti rear-ended a gray 2006 Nissan car and flipped, police said.

Witnesses told investigators that the Infiniti was traveling at least 100 mph before it crashed, Trooper Woodrow Montgomery said.

Authorities believe that alcohol was a factor and charges are pending.

Michael was pronounced dead at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest. The driver of the Infiniti was taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Five other drivers and passengers in the other two vehicles did not seek medical treatment, police said.
