Chicago teen charged in Elmhurst College carjacking
A Chicago teen is facing charges alleging he stole a vehicle at gunpoint earlier this year at Elmhurst College, authorities said.
The 17-year-old boy was charged Sunday with aggravated vehicular hijacking and armed robbery stemming from the Jan. 22 incident, according to a news release from the DuPage County state's attorney's office.
The teen and an accomplice are accused of carjacking a driver who had just exited his vehicle, showing a gun and driving off, authorities said. Police chased the stolen vehicle, but the suspects were able to get away.
An investigation conducted by Elmhurst police led to the teen's arrest, officials said.
"The Elmhurst Police Department has done some truly exceptional work in identifying the suspect in this case," State's Attorney Robert Berlin said. "Though it has been several months since the alleged carjacking, the apprehension of this juvenile demonstrates law enforcement's commitment to see that this type of violent crime does not go unpunished."
Elmhurst police Chief Michael Ruth said the department's investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call (630) 530-3050.
