Source: Suspect in battery of Elmhurst cop may have been shot

Police believe the suspect they are looking for in Tuesday afternoon's investigation of an aggravated battery against a police officer in Elmhurst may have been shot and wounded when an Elmhurst officer fired his weapon.

Sources familiar with the DuPage County Major Crimes Task Force investigation say officers are scouring hospitals for gunshot patients in hopes of finding the man they say fled from a traffic stop.

During the traffic stop, Elmhurst officials say, the suspect drove his vehicle in the direction of the officer and the officer fired his weapon at the vehicle. The suspect then crashed into another vehicle as he fled.

No officers were injured.

According to an ABC 7 report, witnesses said they heard possible gunshots and saw several people being taken out of a car and put into handcuffs.

The shooter's vehicle was recovered in Chicago a short time later police said.

The investigation closed traffic along more than one mile of York Road between Lake Street and Grand Avenue from about 5 p.m. until early Wednesday morning.
