Prospect Heights alderman breaks powerlifting records

Prospect Heights Alderman Lora Messer isn't messing around - in the weight room, that is.

While recovering from a bout with the flu, Messer, 41, squatted 292.1 pounds at a recent powerlifting meet to break the state record in her age division. She also broke the state record by lifting 799.2 pounds in the combined weight competition, which adds the totals of squat, bench press and deadlift.

She finished third overall in the masters division.

Messer has a goal of breaking her own state records again and eclipsing the 800-pound mark in the combined weight competition.

A relative newcomer to the sport, Messer broke state records last year in the squat and the combined competition after just a year of powerlifting.
