Source: Man fired at officer, fled traffic stop in Elmhurst

Elmhurst police say they are searching for a man who fled a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon.

Officers stopped a vehicle at York Road and Crestview Avenue but, before the stop was completed, the driver fled the scene, according to a news release from the Elmhurst Police Department.

The driver of the car fired shots at the officer and the officer fired back as the car sped away, a law enforcement source said.

According to an ABC 7 report, witnesses said they heard possible gun shots and saw several people being taken out of a car and put into handcuffs.

The shooter's vehicle was recovered in Chicago but the driver remains at large, police said.

Elmhurst police on Tuesday evening asked commuters to avoid the area; later, around 9 p.m., officials said there was no threat to residents' safety.

The police investigation has closed traffic along more than one mile of York Road between Lake Street and Grand Avenue since around 5 p.m.
