Endorsement: Corrigan in GOP primary for Illinois House District 53

Two earnest Republicans are competing in the GOP primary for the Illinois House District 53 seat now held by state Rep. David Harris of Arlington Heights. The winner is expected to take on former state Rep. Mark Walker of Arlington Heights, who is running unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Harris will be a tough act to follow, and Walker will be a tough competitor to beat, although both cast controversial votes in favor of state income tax increases.

The candidate with the background that offers the most promise is Eddie Corrigan of Arlington Heights. He is a native of the Northwest suburbs and a thoughtful conservative who has gained perspective on politics and public service as an outreach coordinator for U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam of Wheaton.

His opponent, Katie Miller of Mount Prospect, is a nurse who is running because she got fed up with her rising property tax bill and there is something appealing about her Ms.-Smith-goes-to-Springfield campaign. But her politics are too staunchly conservative on social issues to mesh with the moderate views of the district or to put her in position to win a tough general election contest.

We endorse Corrigan.
