No injuries in Elgin townhouse fire

No injuries were reported after a townhouse fire in Elgin on Friday night, officials said.

While the area of a gas fireplace appears to have been where the fire originated, an exact cause has yet to be determined, according to a news release from the Elgin Fire Department. The estimated fire loss was roughly $50,000 to the building and contents.

Officials said firefighters were summoned at 7:03 p.m. to a four-unit townhouse building on the 1900 block of Matthew Court. A resident in one of the units reported she saw flames on the outside of her fireplace inside her home and also extending up an outside wall to the gutters.

Firefighters quickly had the blaze under control, authorities said. No firefighters or residents were injured.

The affected unit is not habitable at this time, and the resident was relocated with assistance from the Elgin Fire Department chaplain, officials said in a release.
