Search ends for Schaumburg native swept away by flash flood in Hawaii
The search for Schaumburg native and traveling nurse Kelly Mrowinski in Hawaii ended Friday evening, exactly one week after she was reported as having been swept away by a flash flood.
Now, officials will simply wait to see if the discovery of either her or her body is reported, said Alan Richmond, public information officer for the Hawaii Police Department.
The weeklong search was called off at 10 p.m. Central time.
Mrowinski, who attended Schaumburg High School from 2004 to 2007, was hiking with a male friend along the Wailuku River near the Piihonua Falls on the island of Hawaii when both were swept away by fast-moving floodwaters on Jan. 26, authorities said.
The man was able to make it to shore.
Mrowinski was an employee of Aya Healthcare, based in San Diego, which sets up short-term contracts that allow its nurses to travel and see the country. Marketing Director Erin Stafford said Hawaii is understandably a popular destination.
According to Mrowinski's Facebook page, she previously worked as a registered nurse at Northwestern Medicine, studied nursing at St. Xavier University in Chicago, and had been a student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Her family members in Schaumburg have asked for privacy.
