Teen charged in suspected gang shooting near Palatine High School

An 18-year-old Palatine man is facing charges in connection with what police are labeling a gang-related shooting last week near Palatine High School, authorities said Sunday.

Luis Corona, of the 1300 block of Winslowe Drive, is charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school and possession of marijuana with intent to deliver in connection with an investigation launched into reports of shots fired Tuesday.

Palatine police say they were called about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday to a report of possible shots fired in the 1300 block of North Rohlwing Road, near the high school and Virginia Lake Elementary School. The caller said several "pops" - believed to be gunshots - could be heard while several people appeared to be fighting in that area.

Officers gathered evidence at the scene and verified that shots were fired, police said. Nobody was injured.

An investigation led authorities to Corona, who police say is an admitted gang member.

Additional charges could be forthcoming as the investigation continues, police said. Corona is scheduled to appear in bond court Monday.
