Elgin woman killed in North Aurora crash involving Pace bus

An Elgin woman was killed Wednesday morning when she lost control of the sport utility vehicle she was driving on an icy Route 31 near North Aurora and hit an oncoming Pace bus.

The Kane County sheriff's department reported Monica Cruz, 41, was declared dead at the scene.

The crash happened north of Oak Street.

Cruz was driving a Mercury Mountaineer north around 7 a.m. It crossed the centerline and hit the southbound Pace bus.

The bus pushed the Mountaineer back in to the northbound lanes, where it hit a Honda Civic. A GMC van then hit the Mountaineer.

The drivers of the Honda and the van were not injured. The bus driver and one passenger suffered minor injuries, and a second passenger was not injured.

The road was closed for four hours for an investigation.
