2 in custody in Elmhurst carjacking probe

Two men are in custody in connection with a carjacking Monday afternoon in an Elmhurst College parking lot near Prospect Avenue, authorities said.

Police said the driver parked his sport utility vehicle in the lot around 1:45 p.m. when four black men approached him in a maroon Chevrolet sedan. Two of the men got out of the vehicle and one displayed a black handgun.

The men took the victim's car keys, police said, and drove away with the SUV while the other two men fled in the Chevy. No injuries were reported.

Responding officers spotted both vehicles heading east on I-290 from the St. Charles Road area. With the assistance of other police agencies, the officers were able to stop the Chevy on I-290 near 25th Avenue and took an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old man into custody.

Additional Elmhurst officers, with the assistance of Chicago and state police, tried to stop the stolen SUV, but it fled at a high rate of speed on Independence Avenue in Chicago.

The stolen SUV was found abandoned in an alley at 2:08 p.m. on the 3600 block of W. Lexington in Chicago. The two men in that vehicle escaped and remain at large. They are described as black men wearing dark-colored sweatpants and surgical masks or ski masks over their faces.

Elmhurst police have added patrols with both marked and unmarked cars. Residents are asked to immediately call 911 to report any suspicious activity. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (630) 530-3050.
