Schaumburg HS athletic trainer in running for national honor

• Michael DeVries, a certified athletic trainer at Schaumburg High School, was named the regional nominee for the 2018 Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award. As the regional nominee, DeVries will advance on to join other regional nominees from across the nation to be considered the 2018 Newell Award National Athletic Trainer of the Year, which will be announced in the spring of 2018.

In partnership with Barrington Orthopedic Specialists and other leading orthopedic practices nationwide, The Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award recognizes athletic trainers for the service and leadership they provide local athletic communities. DeVries received his undergraduate degree in athletic training from Aurora University, Aurora, and earned a master of education degree from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb. He has been involved in the sports medicine community for nearly a decade.

In addition to DeVries, there were several other exceptional candidates considered for regional nomination for the 2018 Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award, including Colin Doherty of William Fremd High School, Greg Garofalo of Hoffman Estates High School and Kelly Vanderstappen of Buffalo Grove High School.

• District 62 named Mark Bertolozzi the assistant superintendent for Business Services, responsible for overseeing the financial and business operations. Oversight includes financial planning, budgeting, purchasing, facilities, fiscal accounting, financial reporting, grants, insurance, transportation, food services, warehousing and accounts payable.

Bertolozzi, who will replace the retiring Nelson Gray on July 1, is no stranger to District 62 having gone through the school system as a child. He has many years of experience in the business field and in education. Over the last five years, Bertolozzi has served as the chief financial officer of McHenry School District 15. Prior to his tenure in McHenry, he was the business manager at Wood Dale School District 7 for five years. He is presently serving a three-year term as a director on the state board of the Illinois Association of School Business Officials. He holds a bachelor's degree from Marquette University and a master's degree from the University of Chicago.

• Four Northwest Community Healthcare physicians were named to Chicago magazine's 2018 Top Docs List, a roundup of 591 doctors representing 48 specialties. Those who made the list are endorsed by their peers as the best in the six-county metropolitan area. The NCH Medical Group doctors on the list include: Dr. John R. Onufer, cardiac electrophysiology; Dr. Noreen Galanter, internal medicine; Dr. Michelle Seo, internal medicine; and Dr. Theodore Homa, geriatric medicine. The list appears in the January 2018 issue of Chicago magazine.
