Lake County police stations collected more than 3,693 pounds of pills in 2017

Village police stations in Lake County collected more than 3,693 pounds of unused and expired prescription drugs in 2017 as part of a program organized by the county and the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County. The top three police departments in collections were: Lake Zurich, 844 pounds of drugs; Wauconda, 718 pounds; and Lake Forest, 659 pounds. Kyle Kordell, assistant to the village manager in Lake Zurich, said police did a phenomenal job promoting the availability of the collection program to the community. About 1,500 of the pills collected by Lake Zurich police were classified as DEA controlled substances and had a street value of around $31,000. Residents can drop unused and expired prescription drugs in the collection boxes at any time, no questions asked. To find the nearest collection box, visit drugfreelakecounty.org.
