"I am a survivor." A 46-year-old Schaumburg woman who was sexually assaulted and strangled by a man she has known half her life - who was beaten by that man so severely her eyes swelled shut; who spent a week in the hospital and months in therapy recovering from his kicks and punches - wrote those words in the victim impact statement she delivered this week at his sentencing hearing. Traffic is beginning to back up heading toward Chicago, but suburban expressways and tollways remain largely clear. An abandoned truck on southbound I-94 near Niles Center Road is stalling traffic there. Eastbound I-290 slows down from Des Plaines to Cicero avenues. Full traffic.

Cleveland hands Bulls first loss in 8 games

The streak ended last night, but the Chicago Bulls earned some style points while suffering their first loss since Nikola Mirotic returned from injury. The Bulls took Cleveland to the wire, finally losing 115-112 when Denzel Valentine's fallaway 3-pointer fell short at the buzzer. The unlikeliest of winning streaks ended at seven. Full story.

Armed robbery in Naperville

Naperville police are beginning to investigate an armed robbery reported about 6:50 p.m. Thursday on the 1600 block of North Route 59. Police describe the suspect as a white man standing about 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing between 120 and 130 pounds and wearing a black mask or scarf, a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants. Police said the man showed a handgun and ran away from the area heading west.

Dist. 95 settles hazing lawsuit

Lake Zurich Unit School District 95 has entered into a settlement agreement in the lawsuit filed on behalf of two students who were hazed while on the Lake Zurich High School football team, the district announced late Thursday. Full story.

Suburban county treasurers have been swamped with phone calls, emails and visits from people wanting to prepay property tax bills ahead of the biggest rewrite of the federal tax system in 30 years. "We have seen huge numbers," Lake County Treasurer David Stolman said Thursday. "People began lining up at 8:15 this morning, and there were about 50 people in line during our peak time." 15 years in prison for teen who carjacked Hanover Park cabbies

A Chicago teen pleaded guilty to carjacking two different cabdrivers in Hanover Park last summer. Martin Barrientos, 19, was sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison in exchange for pleading guilty to two counts of aggravated vehicular hijacking and one count of robbery, court records show. North Chicago man charged in two Waukegan robberies

Using what an official called "old-fashioned police work," Waukegan police detectives arrested a North Chicago man for two robberies they say he carried out in the past week. Cmdr. Joe Florip said detectives used surveillance footage to determine that Tharon Williams, 49, was the suspect in both cases. Full story.

Aurora man sentenced to 12 years in prison for stabbing

An Aurora man is headed to prison for stabbing a man in the neck at an Aurora bar in April 2016. Michael W. Moser-Booth was sentenced to 12 years in prison for one count of armed violence. Authorities said Moser-Booth entered a bar in the 700 block of Hill Avenue in Aurora on April 12, 2016, and stabbed the victim in the left side of the neck. Full story.

Prospect Heights police searching for shooter

Prospect Heights police said Thursday that they are searching for the person who shot a 19-year-old man in the leg Tuesday on the 1100 block of Cove Drive in the Quincy Park neighborhood. The 19-year-old victim has been released from the hospital. He was shot just before 4:23 p.m. on Tuesday. Full story.
