Time set for York's Joe Newton memorial celebration

A time has been set for the memorial celebration to remember legendary York High School cross country coach Joe Newton.

School officials say the celebration will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, in the school's Commons at 355 W. St. Charles Road.

Newton, 88, died this month in Arizona. He was 87 when he retired at the end of the 2016 season after 60 years of coaching.

Newton arrived at York as a teacher in 1956 and took over the cross country and track programs in 1960. During his tenure, the Dukes won 29 state titles - 28 in cross country and another in track and field.
