Wheaton flips the switch on holiday festivities

Downtown Wheaton has taken on a festive glow.

The community on Friday celebrated the arrival of the holiday season by flipping the switch on the tree in Memorial Plaza, the first event in a weekend of seasonal festivities.

With the tree aglow, the Wheaton Holiday Parade stepped off and community groups - many with lighted floats and holiday accessories - entertained crowds along Wheaton Avenue and Front Street. But the marchers and floats were merely a prelude to the parade's star attraction: Santa Claus, who arrived in town in time to join the end of the parade.

Santa will be in Wheaton again on Saturday to meet with children, hear their Christmas wishes and pose for selfies. He'll be available from noon to 3 p.m. near the community Christmas tree in Martin Memorial Plaza, 134 W. Front St.

Meanwhile, families also can enjoy free horse-drawn carriage rides through downtown Wheaton from noon to 3 p.m. at Martin Memorial Plaza.
