Metra stopping at Wheaton station despite Wednesday fire

A fire Wednesday night at the Metra station on West Front Street in Wheaton has caused the ticket office and shelter to close until further notice, officials said.

Union Pacific West trains will continue to stop at the station. Metra ran a Sunday schedule Thanksgiving Day and will resume normal weekday scheduling Friday, spokesman Tom Miller said.

ABC 7 reports Wheaton firefighters responded to the blaze shortly after 11 p.m. The fire started in a storage room where the furnace was located.

Investigators said Friday the fire was accidental and appears to be related to a heater unit malfunctioning.

No one was in the building during the fire, authorities said.
