Psychiatrist's license suspended after claims of inappropriate contact

A psychiatrist from Schaumburg has had his medical license temporarily suspended while awaiting a hearing on allegations of inappropriate contact with a young patient, according to officials at the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

State regulators invoked an emergency suspension of psychiatrist Blaise Wolfrum's license Wednesday after receiving a report he had inappropriate contact with a minor patient and inappropriately prescribed controlled substances, regulation department spokesman Terry Horstman said.

Wolfrum practices at Behavioral Health Care Associates in Schaumburg.

Among the inappropriate behavior alleged was Wolfrum's sitting so close to the patient that their knees touched, putting his hands on the patient's knees, placing his hand on the patient's exposed abdomen, prolonged hugging when saying goodbye, and engaging in a religious conversation unrelated to treatment.

Wolfrum released a statement on the suspension of his license Thursday.

"This is a temporary suspension until a scheduled hearing for a later date this month," it said. "The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation has never heard Dr. Wolfrum's side of the story nor do they have a complete set of the records that will show Dr. Wolfrum's professional performance in dealing with some of the most difficult and complicated patients."

The Medical Disciplinary Board of the regulation department will hold a hearing on the charges at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27, in Suite 9-300 of the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago.

The department is informing the public that anyone wishing to file a complaint may do so online at IDFPR.com, by phone at (312) 814-6910, or by writing to the Division of Professional Regulation's Complaint Intake Unit at 100 W. Randolph St., Suite 9-300, Chicago IL 60601.

Wolfrum's statement added, "Dr. Wolfrum has been in practice for over 30 years and has been board certified with added qualifications in addiction psychiatry and is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Wolfrum personally treated thousands of patients and rid them of addictions to drugs and alcohol."
