Fake parking violation stickers in downtown Elgin

At least two people found fake parking violation notices on their vehicles in downtown Elgin, and police are looking for the culprit.

A woman who parked her car on Highland Avenue just east of Douglas Avenue said she and another woman found the official-looking orange stickers on their cars Tuesday, Elgin Police Parking Control Supervisor Brooke Rzeppa said.

The stickers state the vehicle is illegally parked because it exceeds the two-hour parking maximum, and warns of towing on the next offense. The stickers say "DNA," presumably a reference to the Downtown Neighborhood Assocation of Elgin.

The caller said she also got a sticker last week; both women work in downtown Elgin, Rzeppa said.

The stickers were not issued by the association or by police, Deputy Chief Bill Wolf said.

"It clearly was not one of our tickets," he said. "It appears it's somebody that presumably is upset with the parking situation, or people violating the limit of parking."

Police are investigating and will look through any available video footage in the area to identify who placed the stickers on the vehicles. The person could be charged with forgery, Wolf said.

DNA Executive Director Jennifer Fukala said she was surprised the fake stickers mention the agency.

"That's definitely not what we do or what we are about," she said. "If there are issues with parking, there's definitely a better way to address that."

The parking division has an officer assigned to downtown Elgin who often writes tickets for vehicles that exceed parking limits, Rzeppa said.
