Driver charged with striking Palatine High student in crosswalk

A Palatine man has been charged with striking a Palatine High School student with his car by speeding in reverse in the school parking lot.

Police say the 23-year-old driver of a 2007 Audi A4 was going the wrong way at a high rate of speed when he struck a 17-year-old female student about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday in the one-way student drop off lane. The student was walking through a marked crosswalk, police said.

The student suffered injuries to her head and lower extremities, and was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights where she was treated and later released. The driver and two passengers in the car were not injured, police said.

The driver, Gerson M. Aguilar-Torres, of the 0-100 block of Dundee Quarter Drive, was charged with felony counts of aggravated reckless driving and aggravated driving while license suspended. During a court hearing Thursday, Aguilar-Torres was also charged with violating probation based on a previous DUI conviction. A judge set bail at $125,000.

He is due back in court Nov. 3.
