Mount Prospect to bury time capsule, honor founders on Saturday

Mount Prospect officials will bury a time capsule at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, as part of the town's 18-month-long centennial celebration, then dedicate five bronze wall plaques honoring those who founded the village.

The village's Centennial Commission, its elected officials and representatives of Sevres, its French Sister City, will gather on Centennial Green, the Emerson Street-facing lawn of the village hall, to bury a capsule with 2017 memories atop another recently repacked time capsule filled with memorabilia from both Mount Prospect's 50th anniversary celebration in 1967 and its 75th anniversary in 1992.

The older capsule was unearthed in July 2016 and its contents has been periodically displayed in the Mount Prospect Public Library ever since. It is expected that both capsules will next be unearthed for the village's 150th anniversary in 2067.

Those gathered also will dedicate plaques to town founders Ezra Eggleston, John Moehling, William Wille, John Meyn and William Busse.

Then they will unveil and dedicate five garden-mounted informational signs. One will be on Mount Prospect's early history and the other four will discuss the four primary founders' contributions to that history. Descendants of those founders will participate in the unveilings.

Remaining centennial events Jim Gibbons speaking on "A World Gone Mad: World War I" at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 7, at the Mount Prospect library; the Mount Prospect Historical Society 30th annual Housewalk from noon to 5:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 3; and the Centennial Commission's presentation of its final report to the village board at its Tuesday, Feb. 6, meeting.
