Authorities: Man stabbed drunken driver during traffic altercation
A Lake County man is facing multiple felony charges alleging he stabbed a suspected drunken driver after a traffic altercation Saturday in Round Lake.
Michael P. Abbinanti, 46, of the 33100 block of Mill Road in Wildwood, is charged with three counts of aggravated battery stemming from the stabbing, which left a 36-year-old man with nonlife-threatening injuries, Lake County Sheriff's police said.
The stabbing victim, Ramon Quiroz, of the 1100 block of Shoreline Court in Round Lake Beach, is charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the sheriff's office.
Authorities said sheriff's deputies were called about 7:20 p.m. Saturday to the area of Route 120 and Interstate 94 near Waukegan for a traffic crash. When they arrived, they located a 1999 Ford Escort in the grassy center median and a 1997 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, which had been struck by a car, sheriff's police said.
An investigation determined that the Abbinanti, the driver of the motorcycle, and Quiroz had previously been in a traffic altercation near Route 120 and Fairfield Road in Round Lake.
As they approached I-94, Quiroz drove his vehicle into the grassy median and stopped, sheriff's police said. Abbinanti parked his motorcycle on the side of Route 120 and approached Quiroz, leading to an altercation during which the Round Lake Beach man was stabbed several times with a knife, authorities said.
While that was occurring, Abbinanti's motorcycle was struck by a passing vehicle, sheriff's police said.
Abbinanti appeared in court Monday, when his bail was set at $30,000. He posted the 10 percent required and was released pending a Nov. 1 court date.
Quiroz is due in court on Nov. 15 on the DUI charge.
