PADS shelter seeks volunteers

The West Chicago PADS homeless shelter is seeking new volunteers to attend an orientation meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at First United Methodist Church, 643 E. Washington St., West Chicago. The first night of shelter is Thursday, Oct. 5, and the shelter is open every Thursday evening through May. Each shelter night has four volunteer shifts: 6:30 to 9 p.m. involves setting up the church and serving dinner; 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. includes serving late arrivals and cleaning up after dinner, making lunches, and washing the guests' laundry; 1 to 5 a.m. involves monitoring guests' safety, doing guests' laundry; and finishing making lunches; 5 to 7:30 a.m. includes serving breakfast and cleaning up the site. People also are needed to wash the bed linens and provide support for the food coordinator.
