Police: ATM skimming device found in Gurnee

Gurnee police say a skimming device was located last week on an automated teller machine in the village and, based on experience, when one is located, others likely are close by.

Skimming typically requires two devices installed on an ATM or other card reader: one piece skims, or captures, data from a card's magnetic stripe, while an accompanying pinhole camera captures cardholders' PINs as they're entered.

Police said there is no fail-safe way to completely prevent the compromise of credit/debit card data from skimming devices, so it is critical that consumers closely monitor their credit and debit accounts.

People also should be on the lookout for any items that do not appear to be a regular part of a typical machine. If anything looks out of place don't use that machine.
