Truck fire closes North Avenue in Carol Stream Sunday
No one was injured when a semi-tractor truck caught fire and created a hazmat spill in Carol Stream Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
Officials from the Carol Stream Police Department said the semi was traveling east when the vehicle caught fire on the 400 block of North Avenue at about 3:40 p.m.
The driver was able to pull over and escape without injuries before the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames, authorities said.
The fire compromised the gas tank of the vehicle, resulting in a hazardous materials spill, authorities said. A hazardous materials team was called in by the Carol Stream Fire Protection District to tend to the spill, authorities said.
Eastbound North Avenue was shut down for about 90 minutes Sunday, authorities said. The scene was completely cleared at about 8:45 p.m., authorities said.
