New businesses coming to Golf Plaza II in Mount Prospect

Two new businesses are coming to the Golf Plaza II shopping center at Golf and Elmhurst roads in Mount Prospect where a renovation project nears completion.

A soft opening is planned for early next week for ethnic grocery store KD Market, which will occupy 30,000 square feet of the former Dominick's grocery store property, according to Bill Cooney, Mount Prospect director of community development.

Another 15,000 square feet of the former Dominick's property will be occupied by the Ball Factory, an indoor play area for children, DiMucci Company leasing agent Tom Niemira said. Work on the Ball Factory will begin soon, Cooney said.

Construction will then move south in the plaza, where businesses Pain & Rehab and Massage Spa & Beyond are located. Vincent Perez, a DeMucci Company carpenter, said improvements will be made to the front of the plaza and new siding will be installed.

Parking lot renovations, which began this year, have been completed. Work included new asphalt, curbs, islands and landscaping.

The plaza construction project is expected to wrap up in September, Cooney explained. However, if DiMucci Company pursues adding a drive-through to Walgreens, that would push completion to sometime in 2018.

The company also tried to purchase the Elk Grove Township Youth Services building at 401 W. Golf Road, next to the plaza, but the bid was not accepted.

“We're going forward and working around it,” Niemira said.

Elk Grove Township Supervisor Mike Sweeney said the township has not spoken to any company representatives regarding another offer to buy the property.

During an April town hall meeting, township board members received permission from voters to sell the property.

However, due to previous contamination at the site, board members agreed to postpone the bid process until receiving a letter from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency indicating the property is safe.

“Once we have that letter, then we'll discuss starting a new bid process,” Sweeney said. “With the letter, our feeling is the property will be more valuable and attractive to multiple bidders.”

Owners of businesses currently in the plaza say they are looking forward to having new shops nearby.

“I'm a very, very, very big supporter of retailers,” said Robert Dooley, part-owner of Millie's Hallmark Shop. “We encourage retailers to come into the village and mall.”
