Des Plaines chamber to host 'back-to-work boot camp' for veterans

Rivers Casino is donating $65,000 to fund a "back-to-work boot camp" organized by the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce.

The effort is intended to help veterans transition to civilian jobs after an eight-week program. The chamber will accept up to 20 veterans who were honorably discharged.

"We are so grateful for the men and women of the armed forces," Executive Director Andrea Biwer said in a news release.

"We know these veterans acquired many skills during their service, but for too many, connecting to the right opportunity to their skill sets is very difficult."

The chamber, Oakton Community College, Harper College and human resources representatives from local businesses will select candidates.

At the end of the boot camp, participants will receive a gift package valued at $8,000, including a personal computer, gift cards for work attire, a personalized resume, professional photo headshot, $500 Jewel-Osco gift card and one-year vehicle maintenance package.
