Hoffman Estates to pay over $260,000 for bridge repair

Hoffman Estates officials have approved a $262,529 contract to repair significant deterioration of the north parapet wall of the Hoffman Boulevard bridge over the Canadian National railroad tracks near the Sears Centre Arena.

An inspection report last year recommended such a repair be prioritized to maintain the structural integrity of the parapet wall, according to village staff.

The project will increase the height of the wall to 4½ feet to comply with new bike standards and will include installation of a new guardrail.

The work will be done by Lorig Construction of Des Plaines, which was the lowest bidder among seven companies.

The engineer for the project had estimated the construction cost at $275,938.

Hoffman Estates' 2017 budget anticipated a total project cost of $320,000 for both engineering and construction. But with approval of the Lorig Construction contract, the total cost will be $312,247.

Assistant Village Manager Mark Koplin said the work is expected to take six to eight weeks, but can't begin until Canadian National has received and approved plans for the repair.
