Streamwood fire believed to have started in kitchen

Streamwood firefighters Wednesday continued to investigate the cause of a townhouse fire Tuesday afternoon, but they believe it began in the kitchen of one of the middle units of the six-unit building.

The condition of the one person hospitalized for minor burns, a man in his 20s or 30s, could not be immediately obtained Wednesday, officials said.

The fire in the two-story building on the 3000 block of Lynnwood Court left four of its six units currently uninhabitable, Streamwood Fire Chief Chris Clark said. The overall damage estimate was $500,000.

Both units that escaped significant damage were on the north end of the building, Clark said. He did not have information on how many people were displaced.

Firefighters received the call to the building just north of Lake Street and east of South Bartlett Road at 4:05 p.m. Tuesday.

A 16-year-old resident, Tejah Ward, told the Daily Herald she believed the stove in her unit may have started the fire. Only her stepfather was home at the time, she said.
