State lawmakers hosting shred day event in Des Plaines

State lawmakers from Des Plaines are hosting a community shred day intended to help fight identity theft.

State Sen. Laura Murphy and state Rep. Marty Moylan are hosting the event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Juno Lighting, 1300 S. Wolf Road in Des Plaines.

More than 15 million U.S. residents have their identity stolen every year, resulting in nearly $50 billion stolen from victims. Many of these crimes are committed by criminals sifting through trash in search of credit card bills and other personal information, according to a news release from the lawmakers.

"The number of financial crimes committed each year is staggering," Murphy said. "This shred day will give local residents the peace of mind to know their personal information won't fall into the wrong hands."

There's a limit of two boxes per car; cardboard boxes cannot be left at the event; resident shredding only; and remove paper clips, staples and other bindings.
