Butera grocery store could open Des Plaines location by fall
Des Plaines' newest grocery could be opening as soon as October.
City Manager Mike Bartholomew told city council members Monday that Piggly Wiggly Midwest stores secured building permits to renovate space at The Oaks Shopping Center at the northeast corner of Oakton and Lee streets. The company plans to open a Butera market in the vacant former 64,000-square-foot grocery store.
Last year, Butera/Piggly Wiggly acquired the property in an auction of assets owned by Joe Caputo & Sons, which had become financially overextended taking over former Dominick's locations.
There's been a lot of movement in the Des Plaines grocery market lately. A Mariano's grocery store opened this spring and Sam's Fresh Market recently opened in the former Ace Hardware store on Oakton Street.
Meanwhile, efforts to reopen a Caputo store at 959 E. Oakton last winter failed when it closed again soon after.
