Hoffman Estates man charged with sexually abusing teen

A 60-year old Hoffman Estates man who told police he thought a teenage girl out riding her bike was a prostitute and offered her money to have sex with him faces criminal sexual abuse and unlawful restraint charges, authorities said.

Elias Serna, who has no criminal background, was ordered held on $150,000 bond Wednesday.

Prosecutors say the 18-year-old was riding her bike Saturday evening on the 900 block of Bode Road when she stopped to text her sister.

Serna approached her, complimented her on her bike and grabbed the handlebars so she could not leave, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Maureen McGee.

McGee said Serna then grabbed, hugged and kissed the teen against her will. She raised her voice, hoping to attract attention from a bystander, and told him to stop, said McGee. At that point, Serna grabbed her arms and asked when she was coming back, McGee said. He then retrieved a $10 bill from his pocket and attempted to place it in her sweater, McGee said.

The teen broke free, rode home, told her mother and filed a police report that included a description of the man who grabbed her, prosecutors said. On Monday, she saw Serna outside a liquor store and called police. Serna told them he thought the teen was a prostitute and would have paid her $10 for sex, McGee said.

Serna next appears in court on June 8.
