Two fires cause damage in Elmhurst

No injuries were reported in two Elmhurst fires - the first triggered by a lightning strike Wednesday night and the second of a still-unknown origin early Thursday morning.

Firefighters said they responded at 7:52 p.m. Wednesday to the lightning strike on the 300 block of North Walnut where the homeowners said they called 911 after feeling their house shake and a sound like a bomb going off.

Firefighters said they found light smoke coming out of the attic vents and were able to extinguish the fire using just five gallons of water.

Damage was limited to the immediate area of the lightning strike, they said.

Crews also were called at 4:44 a.m. Thursday to a report of a fire in a detached garage on the 500 block of Wrightwood.

The homeowner told firefighters a loud noise woke her and about 15 minutes later a neighbor knocked on her door saying her garage was on fire.

Crews extinguished the blaze by 5:10 a.m., but the garage was a total loss.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
