Entertainment lineup announced for Geneva's Swedish Days festival

It's never too soon to know what the entertainment lineup looks like for Swedish Days. A lot more information will be in the newspaper and online prior to the June 20 start of Geneva's annual summer festival.

But for those who spend a few nights sitting on the old courthouse lawn in front of the Central Stage on Third Street during the event, here's the main 8 p.m. acts this time around:

The Geneva Chamber's release about the acts says "just try not to sing along" when Boy Band Night performs the first night of the festival. The chamber will be glad to know that I won't ruin the festivities by actually trying to sing.

Rosie & The Rivets, playing music from the 1950s and '60s will perform June 21. I've seen this band in action, and it results in a great time.

On June 22, a band called 1976 performs, and you pretty much know what decade this music will be from.

Tribute band The Breakfast Club will perform June 23 with a trip back to music from the 1980s.

Finally, on June 24, those who remember Frankie Valli will go back to that era through the music of The Four C Notes.

So, there you have it - a quick look to plot your evening strategy for the grandest summer festival in the land.

The name has it:

We're getting into the golf outing season for our chambers of commerce and various other organizations, and here's an event name that just catches my attention.

The Batavia Chamber of Commerce is holding its 43rd annual Putts and Pigs Golf Classic June 23 at Mill Creek Golf Club.

For those not sure what that means, it's golf-outing lingo for saying there is a pig roast after the golf round.

In a bit of a change, the chamber is holding this event on a Friday.

As any veteran of the fundraising golf outing circuit knows, many of these events fall on Mondays because organizations generally get better rates from the courses on those slower days.

It's always been a nice way to spend a Monday, but there's certainly nothing wrong with starting your weekend off right with an event like this.

Some 'Free Bird':

When a Lynyrd Skynyrd song came on the radio once, my wife mentioned how popular that southern rock band was in this area years ago.

So, the Operation Support Our Troops - America organization has made a good choice in bringing Lynyrd Skynyrd in to perform July 22 at the Kane County Cougars' Northwestern Medicine Field.

It's the biggest fundraiser of the year for the organization, which also has booked Motown tribute band The Voices, and Ayla Brown and Empty Pockets to perform that day.

Tickets for the event, which starts at 2:30 p.m. and finishes in the evening with a fireworks display, are available at kcougars.com.

Those attending are being asked to consider bringing donation items for Christmas stockings that will be sent to troops serving overseas.

There are various ticket packages available for attendees to consider, with one, of course, being called the Free Bird VIP package.

Walk helps Haiti:

Those planning to participate in this year's Hope for Haitians 5K Walk/Run know they are doing so to help the poor people in that country have homes and a way to send their kids to school.

The 11 a.m. event takes place May 20 at the Kane County Government Center in Geneva, and the funds raised go toward the organization's mission to build safe homes for those in extreme poverty. Registration, food and kids activities start at 9:30 a.m.

The organization says it has built about 50 homes in each village it serves and has estimated that $125 pays for a whole year of school for a child.

Cost to participate is $25 ($30 on race day) and free for children 12 and younger. More information is available at amy@hopeforhaitians.org.
