Keep peace prominent during holiday season

I recently saw a bumper sticker with the following words: "Know God, Know Peace; No God, No Peace." As a Christian, I find it quite relevant during this Christmas season when many of us are asking for peace. Maybe you've received a Christmas card with the words: "Peace on Earth." Yes, all of us would like to see peace in America and peace in this world.

Christmas is a time when a semblance of peace is noticeable. Families gather for dinner and exchange presents, Communities gather in the town square for a cup of hot chocolate, light the Christmas tree and welcome Santa. Yes, Christmas is a time of joy, happiness, smiles good cheer and peace.

I remember hearing the story of a truce on Christmas Day during World War I. Soldiers from France, Germany and Britain unofficially agreed to put down their weapons and mingled together, exchanging food and souvenirs and even singing some Christmas carols. Yes, even enemies recognized that Christmas Day is a time for peace.

Most of us know, historically, that Jesus was born in Bethlehem some 2,000 years ago. Mary and Joseph were among many who headed there for the census and to pay their taxes. The town, being very crowded and rooms being scarce, one innkeeper offered Mary and Joseph some space in his stable. They gladly accepted the offer and we know the rest of the story.

Christmas is the time when Christians celebrate the birth of their Savior. This season, as we gather with family, friends, and neighbors, remember that "Jesus is the reason for the season" and if we really want "Peace on Earth," it must begin with me and you.
