Gun rights support is all about safety

This letter is in response to Mr. Flowers' letter "Putting gun rights over public safety." Please understand gun rights people are all about responsibility and safety.

First, one needs to understand the differences between a privilege and a right. With all due respect, you have not been exercising your "right" to drive a car for more than 65 years. You have been using a privilege granted to you by your state, with all the rules and regulations that come with that privilege. The particular right "gun rights" issue you are speaking of is a right guaranteed to Americans in the U.S. Constitution. Privileges can be revoked, rights are guaranteed and cannot.

Your suggestion that car owners have to deal with many regulations and gun owners don't is wrong and extremely misleading. There are a myriad of laws and regulations set by individual states and the U.S. government. Law-abiding gun owners have never been a problem for public safety.

If you are interested in public safety regarding guns, and keeping with your comparison of cars and guns argument, know that in a good portion of the 20th century, both driver's education and firearms safety/gun clubs were offered and taught in public schools throughout the U.S.

That's right, kids brought guns to school and learned how to respect and safely use them. Today, only driver's education is offered. Yet today, cars and guns both do the same thing they did back then.
