Thankful to be American

Thank you, Karen Meadows, for your eloquent letter Sept. 26 about honoring the American flag. ("Even in protest, show respect for our flag"). You said what many of us feel better than any other letter I've read so far. As the daughter and granddaughter of immigrants (from Germany and Hungary), I watched my father proudly display the American Flag - many times the only one in our neighborhood who did. My husband travels out of the country for business periodically and on his return, every time a U.S. customs agent would say to him, "Welcome back to the United States," he would say, "Thank you, very happy to be back." He recognized firsthand how much all Americans have to be thankful for.
