An exercise in political imagination

Imagine it is the summer of 2009. You voted for Barak Obama. On election night, the news anchors are saying that he has a 20 percent chance of winning. Imagine seeing looks of shock and disappointment on all their faces when Barak Obama is announced as our next president. Imagine hearing reports every day for the following nine months that are 90 percent negative on our newly elected president. Then each night the late-night talk show hosts degrade and ridicule your choice for president. One even implies that Obama is having sex with his own daughter. Other celebrities hold up what looks like the severed head of Obama. A rapper releases a music video in which he shoots Obama in the head.

Some movie star says it is time for an actor to do to Obama as the actor John Wilkes Booth did to Lincoln. Celebrities talk about leaving the country, blowing up the White House and experiencing physical and emotional ailments because Barak Obama is now our president.

The print media ignore Obama's accomplishments and instead place on the covers of their magazines and newspapers insulting headings and clown-like images of Obama. Immediately after his election victory, the Washington establishment begins searching for reasons to impeach President Obama. You who voted for President Obama are called ignorant and deplorable. If you can imagine this, then you can imagine how half of your fellow citizens who voted for Trump are feeling these days.
