Insult, but not assault

In a recent letter, Tony Novak of Arlington Heights claimed that the security people assaulted Dr. Dao and "bloodied his face." First of all, I too, am aghast at what happened to this man. However, I was wondering why he went from being a frantic man screaming to one being apparently unconscious in the blink of an eye. As he was being removed and struggling, his face hit the arm rest of the aisle seat opposite his row. You can hear a moan and then silence and it was in this condition that he was dragged off the plane. Clearly he suffered the injury in the course of being forcibly removed, but was it deliberate? I don't think so. Does this excuse UAL or the aviation police in any way. No, not to my way of thinking, but it is clear that he was not punched. UAL and the aviation police should be thankful that his injuries were not worse.
