West Dundee arts center taking shape
A downtown West Dundee building that once housed a grocery store and later a hardware store, is on the road to becoming a regional performing arts center.Rick Browne, a local architect and actor, has drawn up plans to convert the former Ziegler's Ace Hardware store into the Fox Performing Arts Center.But as part of an agreement with West Dundee, Browne has until Aug. 1 to raise $500,000 in seed money. It's a figure village leaders say would prove there's enough support to make Browne's vision a reality.

"I look forward to someday being able to help those in need through the wonders of human ingenuity and medical technology -- on a scale I had never before thought possible," writes Antonio Spina, of Bartlett High School.

Some of them settled on a life goal when they were preschoolers. Others took a little bit longer to decide. But they all know the possibilities are endless. - Since 1909 when W.D. Boyce brought scouting to America, the guiding principles of the Boy Scouts of America has remained the same; preparing young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Deicke Scout Shop, which is operated by the Boy Scouts of America Three Fires Council, supports the mission of scouting through its large inventory of uniforms, camping equipment, achievement recognitions and more. Plus, the shop serves as a resource center for information and registration of upcoming group outings and activities of the Three Fires Council. In 2010, 357 Eagle Scouts, 16,304 Cub Scouts, 6,574 Boy Scouts, 708 Venturers, and 1,547 Explorers were registered members; plus the Council is proud to serve one of the largest special needs packs in the country. - Gracie Gold, 2012 Junior U.S. National Figure Skating Champion and 2012 World Junior Silver Medalist, stopped by the Triphahn Center Ice Arena in Hoffman Estates this week with her sister Carley Gold. The skaters performed their winning figure skating routines and skated with the Hoffman Estates Figure Skating Academy skaters. Figure skating enthusiasts have pegged Gracie Gold as the United States' best chance for a medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics. "It's a great honor to have skaters of such great caliber visit our rink and meet our skating academy," said Jennifer Dooley, figure skating program manager. The Hoffman Estates Figure Skating Academy is affiliated with the Hoffman Estates Park District and is open to residents and non-residents of Hoffman Estates. These seven students from Quest Academy, Palatine, beat out thousands to earn spots at the recent annual National History Day competition held at the University of Maryland June 12-16. Here, the Quest students displayed their papers, documentaries and websites to compete against participants from all over the globe. Schools from the United States, Guam, American Samoa, China, as well as Department of Defense Schools in Europe had students who qualified to participate. Top finishers from Quest include Marissa Howe, 7th grade, who placed 10th in the nation for her individual documentary, “The Attempted Nazi March in Skokie: Freedom for the Speech We Hate,” and Jenna Chin, 8th grade, who placed 11th in the nation for her paper, “The Escobedo v. Illinois Supreme Court Case.”

- William White explains to Daniel Hoff, Dawn Mattson and Linda Mattson how the VetDog program has enhanced his life. William has had his Labrador Retriever VetDog, Rudy, for a few years. Rudy helps him swim and get out of the pool and with everyday activities. William lost his arm and leg while serving as a Sergeant in the Marines.
