Posted May 25, 2012 5:00 AMThey have different backgrounds and different passions, but the high school seniors named to the Northwest Suburban Daily Herald Academic Team share the conviction it is their duty to contribute to society. "I look forward to someday being able to help those in need through the wonders of human ingenuity and medical technology -- on a scale I had never before thought possible," writes Antonio Spina, of Bartlett High School.

Posted May 25, 2012 5:00 AMMeet the members of the 2011-2012 Fox Valley Academic Team. Here are 10 teenagers who know what they want out of life. Some of them settled on a life goal when they were preschoolers. Others took a little bit longer to decide. But they all know the possibilities are endless. "Putting my passion into diverse activities has opened the gateway for academic learning to be forged into life success," writes Connor Flexman of Elgin Academy.

- An August thunderstorm produces an amazing light show. DuPage and Kane counties have gotten a lot of storms this summer. This is probably the best display of lightning I have seen from a storm in a long time. Erin Anderson
- Author David Bell answers questions from an enthusiastic audience during a presentation at Bridges Academy, 1713 Howard St. in St. Charles, on Oct. 11. Bell, who is touring the nation promoting his new novel Cemetery Girl, made a special trip to the school to talk to children and adults about the writing process and getting published. His No. 1 tip for any writer: Remember to have fun! Bell is an assistant professor of English at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky. He has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. - Since 1909 when W.D. Boyce brought scouting to America, the guiding principles of the Boy Scouts of America has remained the same; preparing young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Deicke Scout Shop, which is operated by the Boy Scouts of America Three Fires Council, supports the mission of scouting through its large inventory of uniforms, camping equipment, achievement recognitions and more. Plus, the shop serves as a resource center for information and registration of upcoming group outings and activities of the Three Fires Council. In 2010, 357 Eagle Scouts, 16,304 Cub Scouts, 6,574 Boy Scouts, 708 Venturers, and 1,547 Explorers were registered members; plus the Council is proud to serve one of the largest special needs packs in the country. - Although the weather forecast indicated a possibility of rain, the students and staff of Turner School were not discouraged as they gathered together on the playground to enjoy a special dance performance by the Gebensbach Trachten Verein Schuhplattler dance group. They performed traditional Bavarian folk dances in the traditional dress. After the performance, the dancers walked through the school visiting different classrooms. - Ashley Heska of Batavia was named the first place winner in the Senior Division of the 28th annual Kane County Fair Talent Contest. The talent contest was held July 18 as a Pre-Fair Showcase. Heska performed a violin solo of "Czardas." Jamie Ann Dowat of St. Charles was the first-place winner in the Junior Division. She sang a vocal solo of "Mambo Italiano" to win the prize. The first place acts of both the Junior and Senior Divisions will automatically represent Kane County in January 2012 at the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs Official Talent Contest State Competition in Springfield.
