Friday, January 27, Glen Crest Middle School was packed to the rafters with avid fans who came to see the middle school 8th grade girls basketball team play the women faulty members and the 8th grade boys basketball team challenge the men faculty members. The Spartan girls were victorious against the faculty women, earning a score of 37 to 33. Their season is just beginning and they are playing like a well-oiled basketball machine already. The 8th grade Spartan boys have earned the DuPage Metro Valley Association Conference Championship and they came on the court with absolutely no loses for their BB season. However, the final score was Faculty Men - 53, Spartan boys - 41. Bragging rights stay with the men faculty another year. Half-time entertainment was provided by the Glen Crest 6th, 7th and 8th grade cheerleading squad as well as the Glen Crest Pep Band. Dressed in pastel shirts, the cheerleaders brought a promise of spring to the snowy night.

While a DuPage Convalescent Center resident hopes she will win a second time during the bingo party, Glen Crest 7th-grader Alex Koon makes sure she doesn't miss any of the numbers. On Jan. 16, Glen Crest Middle School 6th-grade social studies teacher and sponsor of the Glen Crest Builders Club, Craig Hofmann, transported volunteers from the club to the DuPage Convalescent Center where they joined in with residents for a spirited afternoon of Bingo. Co- sponsor, seventh grade social studies teacher, Katie McGrath helped the club members team up with individuals or entire tables of Bingo players. The students took turns calling out the numbers, helping the residents and just visiting with everyone.
There are over 100 members in the Builders Club and they include 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Planning meetings are held two to three times a month to select their service projects. The goal is to actually work off-campus on two to three service projects a month. This is the second year of the clubs existence and it was created by Hofmann to involve middle school students in community activities as well as help their community grow through the middle school students service projects. They received a charter from the Glen Ellyn Kiwanis and now have partnered with that organization. Since its inception, the club has volunteered at Feed My Starving Children, SCARCE, Marklund Childrens Home, DuPage County Forest Preserve, PADS, the Meadows Residential Living, Operation Support Our Troops, and many more. Call Glen Crest office at 630-469-5220 for information about the Builders Club. - Eighth-grade math teachers from Glen Crest Middle School, Maureen Joiner and Jennifer Rodriguez, created a unit of study for their pre-algebra students that required seven math principles and the students' creativity. The idea was developed in 2010 after the teachers realized how popular cake decorating was on TLC, the cable learning channel. Dividing up into teams of three, the math students were required to create a cake that could serve 250 people and illustrated measurement, volume, surface area, percents, conversions, translations, problem solving and creativity. The math classes were to vote on the best cake produced. Building materials used were poster board, cardboard, magic marker, glue, staples and other disposable materials. The winning design was from the minds of Alexandra LaPonte and Ibrahim Jawad. Their cake will be baked by Abbington Banquets for the enjoyment of the entire 8th grade class at Glen Crest during their party at the end of the school year. Photo Caption: Left to right are Glen Crest 8th grade math students Alejandra Villasenor, Dorrion McNeal and Joshua Miller who are helping the winning designers Alexandra LaPonte and Ibrahim Jawad fix up the cake for transportation to Abbington Banquets kitchens where the bakers will duplicate the model. Youth Services Librarian Ridgeway Burns describes the demise of the genius
Albert Einstein at the first meeting of “Lunch ‘n Listen,” a partnership program between the Glen Crest Middle School and the Glen Ellyn Public Library. Burns had an idea to establish a partnership with the schools in the Glen Ellyn area for “Lunch ‘n Listen.“ He hoped to accomplish three goals with this idea, improving comprehension, improving vocabulary and getting the students excited about reading. The idea included visiting a school twice a month and spending part of the boys’ lunch period reading aloud from a unique and entertaining book that the they might not be familiar with. Robin Currie, Early Childhood Librarian at Glen Ellyn Library joined in Burns’s plan to become the person who would visit a school twice a month and only read to the girls. Glen Crest Middle School Director of the Library Technology and Information Center, Pam McDermott, immediately agreed to the entire idea and Burns was invited to Glen Crest on Wednesday, Jan. 11 to meet with the 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys who signed up to participate in “Lunch ‘n Listen.” The boys’ book was titled, “How They Croaked,” and it described the awful ends of the awfully famous. It was non-fiction but read in a way that revealed all the gruesome facts of famous scientists’, genius’s and well known people’s causes of death and what happened to their famous bodies. A great time was had by all. Currie reads to the girls at Glen Crest on Wednesday, January 18. Her theme is mythology with stories of ancient Greek and Roman gods and goddesses. For information about this program call Pam McDermott at 630-469-5220.
