Gas station outside Hoffman Estates Culver's opening a year late

A gas station built in conjunction with a Culver's restaurant that opened in Hoffman Estates last year is expected to finally begin operating during the first week of December.

Village board members Monday issued a special-use permit to the owner of the property on Hoffman Boulevard just west of Route 59 and its I-90 tollway interchange after several failed attempts to get a leasing tenant to step forward as the gas station's operator.

Mayor Bill McLeod asked for and received reassurance from the village's planning staff that the representatives of Hoffman Estates Real Estate LLC in attendance were both the actual owners of the gas station as well as its prospective operators.

"People have been waiting for that gas station to open," McLeod said. "It's very frustrating."

The Culver's and gas station are at the southeast corner of Hoffman Boulevard and an extension of Old Sutton Road, just south of the Poplar Prairie Stone Crossing shopping center.

The special-use permit for the gas station was first granted to the original developer when the project was approved 3½ years ago in April 2014.

But there was some confusion as to whom the permit should be transferred to after the completed development was sold to Hoffman Estates Real Estate. The initial plan to have a tenant operate the gas station ultimately didn't work out.
