Wheeling man sent to prison on gun charge

A Wheeling man arrested on a gun charge after he got into an argument with others last December pleaded guilty Wednesday to aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Erick Hernandez, 23, was sentenced to one year in prison in exchange for his guilty plea, according to court records. He received credit for 118 days in custody and was ordered to pay $734 in fines.

Hernandez got into an argument with some other people shortly before midnight on Dec. 8, 2016, in a parking lot on the 800 block of Rand Road in Mount Prospect.

A police officer saw Hernandez, whom prosecutors described as a gang member, get into the passenger's side of a car driven by a companion. The companion then cut the headlights and drove to another nearby parking lot, prosecutors said. The officer approached the car and observed Hernandez making "furtive" motions near the floor of the car, where officers later recovered a loaded .32-caliber handgun.

Prosecutors said Hernandez had a FOID card but did not possess a concealed carry permit.
