Arbor Day tree-planting celebrates Lombard's 27 years as Tree City USA

Lombard has been named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for the 27th year in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management.

Started in 1976, the Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

Lombard achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program's four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

To recognize Lombard's ongoing status, a ceremonial tree-planting will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, April 28, at the public works facility, 1051 S. Hammerschmidt Ave. The trees will be an American sentry linden and a Worplesdon American sweet gum.
